A Hospital for Hedgehogs

On a quiet farm outside the village of Ashby, there is a small hospital with some very unusual patients. Every year, about 300 sick or injured hedgehogs are brought to the Prickles Rescue Centre. The centre was started twelve years ago by Gail Morton, a retired nurse. Now there is a proper building with heated cages, a room for operations and a team of twenty volunteers. The centre depends completely on donations and receives no money from the government.Volunteers do all kinds of jobs, from cleaning cages to feeding baby hedgehogs every two hours with a tiny bottle. A local vet visits twice a week to check the patients and carry out any operations that are needed.The hedgehogs stay at the centre until they are healthy and heavy enough to survive the winter. Gail says this is the best part of the job. 'Watching one walk off into the long grass makes all the hard work worth it,' she explains.Hedgehogs are becoming rarer in the countryside, and Gail believes that everyone can help them. This allows hedgehogs to move between gardens to find food and somewhere to sleep. Gail also asks gardeners not to use slug pellets, because they can poison the hedgehogs that eat the slugs.
