Most people who get into difficulty in the mountains of Britain are rescued not by professionals but by volunteers. Mountain rescue teams are made of local people, such as teachers, farmers and nurses, who give up their free time to help strangers asking for anything in return. Members must be ready to leave work or get out of bed at a moment's , often in terrible weather. The teams receive little money from the government and mainly on donations from the public. A typical call-out might involve searching for a walker who has lost their in thick fog, or carrying an injured climber down a steep slope on a stretcher. Team leaders say that many incidents could be avoided if visitors a little more care over their preparations. A surprising number of people set out without a map, assuming that their phone will them the way, only to discover halfway up the mountain that the battery has gone .
