Defenders of zoos like to point to captive breeding as their strongest card, but the record is thinner than the publicity suggests. Only a small fraction of the species held in zoos are threatened, and fewer still have ever been returned to the wild. Where zoos genuinely shine is in what they offer visitors. I have watched schoolchildren stand transfixed in front of a gorilla enclosure, and no documentary produces quite that sense of kinship, which often stays with them long after the visit. Conditions, too, have been transformed: the concrete pits of my childhood have largely given way to complex, carefully designed habitats, and keepers now monitor behaviour as closely as diet. What zoos should not do is go on keeping animals whose needs simply cannot be met in captivity. Elephants, which walk many kilometres a day in the wild, are the obvious case; their time in zoos should come to an end.
