The Object I Would Save
Five museum curators describe the one object they would rescue first from their collection
Morwenna Treloar, town museum, Cornwall
Ours is a small museum, and most of our textiles are rather ordinary, but I’d save a christening gown made around 1880. It came to us inside a box of old curtains that a house-clearance firm dropped off, and a volunteer only noticed it because she was looking for something to wrap a vase in. Sewn into the hem is a name, Jane Pascoe, and the word ‘Union’, which is how people referred to the workhouse. We later found out that Jane was an inmate there who sewed for wealthier families in the town. There’s no photograph of her, no letter, nothing in the official records except her admission and her death. The gown is the only trace of what she could do with her hands, and the stitching is exquisite.
